Abstrakt

Wyprawy misjonarzy franciszkańskich przez Saharę, na ziemie imperium Borno oraz państw Hausa zaliczyć należy do pionierskich wypraw europejskich. Są one jednak mało znane, gdyż misjonarze nie pozostawili po sobie zbyt wielu szczegółów etnograficznych, relacji politycznych, danych geograficznych, itp. Wyprawy te inspirowała chęć dotarcia do wiernych chrześcijan, którzy – według wielu relacji – mieli żyć na południe od Sahary, w sąsiedztwie Borno. Polskiego czytelnika z pewnością może najbardziej zainteresować wyprawa misyjna z lat 1710-1711, w której wzięli udział Carlo Maria di Genova oraz Severino da Silesia recte Seweryn Jung z Głogówka, na Śląsku. Artykuł przedstawia te pierwsze wyprawy franciszkańskie w kontekście kulturowo-religijnym XVII, XVIII i XIX w.
