Abstract

Wawrzyniec Gembicki (1559–1624) was one of the most notable Roman Catholic prelate in the modern era. He served as Archibishop of Gniezno, Primate of Poland, Bishop of Chełmno, Bishop of Włocławek, Great Chancellor of the Crown and a diplomatic representative of Poland. He was known for his effective Counter-Reformation actions aimed at maintaining the primacy of Catholicism. Apart from his well-known activity as a bishop, primate and as a politician, Gembicki was also a benefactor of works of art and an initiator of restoration of those which already existed. Especially he took care of the Cathedral of Gniezno. The bishop was known for his many gifts for the churches in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Chełmno and of Włocławek. For the Cathedral of Włocławek he founded for example: famous Crucifix in the Cathedral of Włocławek, a sculpture of Virgin and Child and a liturgical vestment set.

Barbara Grela, Jagiellonian University in Cracow

Studentka II roku studiów doktoranckich na Wydziale Historycznym Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego (kierunek: historia sztuki). Stopień magistra uzyskała na podstawie pracy „Krzyż Tumski w katedrze we Włocławku”, obronionej w 2016 r. W ramach doktoratu zajmuje się nagrobkami pulpitowymi w Królestwie Polskim i Wielkim Księstwie Litewskim.
