Abstract

In the encyclical Redemptoris missio, pope John Paul II calls mass media „the first modern Areopagus” (No. 37). These words refer to the famous speech of St. Paul delivered at the Areopagus in Athens. It is recorded in the seventeenth chapter of Acts of the Apostles. The Areopagus was then the center of culture of educated Greeks. The uniqueness of this speech of the Apostle to the Nations is that there the first important meeting of the Gospel message with the wisdom of the Greek philosophy occurs. Emphasizing the religiosity of the Greeks, expressed in a huge number of gods and extensive mythology, St. Paul speaks there of a God they do not yet know (cf. Acts 17:23). In this scene, Pope John Paul II sees the symbol of new places where the Gospel should be proclaimed today. Above all, he postulates the need for the presence of the Church in mass media which today play a huge role, unite humanity and make it a „global village”. These media have achieved such significance that for many they are the main information and formation tool, a guide and inspiration in individual, family and social behavior. This first modern Areopagus cannot miss the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
