Abstract

The 900th anniversary of the Diocese of Włocławek is an opportunity to look at the activities of the collegial structure, which is the Council of Priests, working in the latest history of the Diocese of Włocławek, it means in the years 2003-2021. According to the Code of Canon Law from 1983, a presbyteral council “is a group of priests which, representing the presbyterium, is to be like a senate of the bishop” (CCL 495 §1). The task of this body is to assists the bishop in the governance of the diocese according to the norm of law, based on its own statutes approved by the diocesan bishop, attentive to the norms issued by the conference of bishops. The aim of these activities is to increase the pastoral good of the portion of the people of God entrusted to him, it means the diocese (CCL 495 §1, 496). In the discussed period, the Presbyteral Council of the Diocese of Włocławek was appointed three times for five-year terms: 2003-2008, 2008-2013, 2013-2018, with the functioning of the last of them extended until the end of the diocesan bishop’s ministry by Bishop Wiesław Mering. The Presbyteral Council of the Diocese of Włocławek for three terms in the years 2003-2021 can be proud of many fruits of its work, which have been presented in this article. This proves the dynamism of this body, sensitivity to issues important for the diocese and a sense of responsibility for the particular Church. On the other hand, the theme of the debate reflects the face of the diocese - its contemporary characteristics, pastoral condition and identity.
